New Light, a bi-annual exhibition held by ViewPoint Gallery, showcases emerging Nova Scotian photographic artists. The participants in the exhibition are selected through a competitive process., and winning images will be printed and displayed by ViewPoint Gallery in a month-long Exhibition held in September, 2019.

Can I submit to the New Light Competition?

New Light is open to any photographer 19 years or older who resides in Nova Scotia as of June 15, 2019, and has not previously exhibited their work as prints (student exhibition & online exhibition do not prevent participation).

Why should I enter?

Five winning photographers will be selected to to have their work printed and presented in the 2019 New Light exhibition at ViewPoint Gallery in September 2019. The grand prize winner will receive a six-month ViewPoint Gallery Exhibiting Membership (a $600 value). The runners up will be awarded Friends of the Gallery privileges for one year (a $50 value).

How do I enter the competition?

All submissions must have the following requirements, or will be not be considered.

Required Contents of Submission:
 

1. Name, contact info, and a short note about who you are and why you photograph (maximum 150 words)

2. 5-10 photographic prints (recommended size 8”x12”) - digital files will not be considered

Submission deadline: Saturday, June 22, 2019

Submission fee: $20. payable by cash, credit card or cheque made out to ViewPoint Gallery

Submissions must be delivered to the Gallery during open hours (Thursday to Sunday, noon to 5pm) or sent by mail. Please package your submission appropriately. ViewPoint Gallery is not responsible for damage or loss of submission materials. Please label your submission package:

Submissions may be collected from the gallery only during open hours between Thursday, July 4 to Sunday, July 28, 2019. If you wish your submission mailed to you, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with sufficient Canadian postage. Submissions not collected by Thursday, August 1, 2019 will be discarded.

Winners responsibilities:

1. Provide a 2-3 sentence artist statement and one digital image for promotional purposes

2. Provide the gallery with print-ready files of the images submitted to the competition

3. Attend at the opening (encouraged but not required)

4. Participate in the artists' talk (encouraged but not required)

 

Gallery responsibilities:

1. Curate of winning photographs

2. Print the curated photographs

3. Install the prints in ViewPoint Gallery

4. Promote the exhibition

5. Host the exhibition opening and artist's talk

Note: As a non-profit organization ViewPoint Gallery is unable to pay artist fees. The Gallery will take care with prints; however, it cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss.

Timeline:

• by August 18, 2019 – deliver print-ready image files to the gallery
