ViewPoint Gallery is seeking a Gallery Assistant

ViewPoint Gallery is an artist-run non-profit cooperative located in Bedford. ViewPoint’s members work together to nurture and promote the practice of photography, to operate a Gallery that exhibits their work as well as the work of guest photographers, and to enhance the cultural life of the broader photographic community. ViewPoint Gallery is the only venue in HRM dedicated solely to contemporary photography and one of only a few photographic galleries in Atlantic Canada. With financial support provided by the Canada Summer Job program, ViewPoint Gallery plans to hire a Gallery Assistant for 35 hours per week for 8 weeks, beginning July 4, 2022 and ending August 26, 2022. The salary is $13.35 per hour (Provincial minimum wage). This is an exciting opportunity which will provide hands-on experience in an art gallery.


The usual work week will be from Monday to Friday, 11-6 pm. The Gallery Assistant will be responsible for leading a one-week photography camp for youth and teenagers. During the summer camp, the Gallery Assistant’s hours will be 9am-5pm. In addition, the Gallery Assistant is expected to attend board meetings on July 17, and August 21, and an exhibit opening on the evenings of July 7 and August 4.


Eligible applicants:

  • must be between 15 and 30 years of age;

  • must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and

  • must be legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant Nova Scotia legislation and regulations.


The Role of the Gallery Assistant 2022

The Gallery Assistant will be responsible for a wide range of administrative duties to assist the artists who operate the Gallery collectively. The Gallery Assistant will work closely with the Board of Directors and Gallery members. The Gallery Assistant will:

  • staff the Gallery during its hours of operation, greet visitors, answer questions, and handle sales;

  • develop and lead a one-week summer camp aimed at youth aged 12-15;

  • prepare the International Photo Competition images for exhibit by printing and framing;

  • attend monthly Board meetings;

  • assist with new exhibits and openings;

  • promote the Gallery through social media and other methods;

  • update Gallery records and artists’ informational materials as needed;

  • provide information to the media and Gallery stakeholders as needed;

  • maintain Gallery and office supplies;

  • undertake other projects as assigned or required.


Mandatory Requirements:  The successful candidate must have the following attributes:

  • has a solid knowledge and practical skills of photography as an art form;

  • possesses the skills, knowledge, and ability to develop and deliver a summer camp for youth and teenagers;

  • has experience working with adolescents;

  • has a positive attitude;

  • is a self-starter who is able to work without close supervision and is also comfortable with asking questions and seeking guidance when necessary;

  • possesses the ability to multi-task and to work independently as well as part of a team;

  • is able to meet deadlines and work under pressure;

  • is familiar with both Mac and PC computers, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media, as well as standard computer programs, such as Word, Excel, and e-mail;

  • has excellent speaking, listening, writing, and editing skills.


Additional Skills: The ideal candidate has the following skill set:

  • has good problem-solving and decision-making skills;

  • has strong teamwork skills;

  • has the flexibility to work with diverse people, while maintaining a professional attitude and composure;

  • is able to work independently and to undertake and accomplish tasks with little oversight;

  • marketing experience is an asset.


Field of interest: The successful candidate will be interested in Fine Arts, Applied Arts, Public Relations, Education, Communications, Graphic Design, Public Administration, Commerce. This position will provide valuable work experience for candidates who are interested in working in the cultural and non-profit sectors.


Work Safety Plan: The Gallery Assistant will be given an orientation, which will include health and safety practices.  They will be provided with literature about workers’ rights and responsibilities, shown the fire escape route, and informed of what to do in an emergency.


Employment dates:        8 weeks beginning July 4, 2022 and ending August 26, 2022.


Hours:                               A total of 280 hours spread out over 8 weeks. This will consist of approximately 35 hours/week for seven (7) weeks (Monday to Friday, 11-6 pm), 40 hours for one (1) week (Monday to Friday, 9:00-5:00), and attendance at occasional other events (board meetings and openings).


Salary:                               $13.35 per hour (Provincial minimum wage)
