ViewPoint Gallery is hiring a Gallery Assistant for 8 weeks!!

Background

ViewPoint Gallery is an artist-run, non-profit cooperative located in Bedford. ViewPoint’s members work together to nurture and promote the practice of photography, to operate a Gallery that exhibits their work as well as the work of guest photographers, and to enhance the cultural life of the broader photographic community. ViewPoint Gallery is the only venue in HRM dedicated solely to contemporary photography and one of only a few photographic galleries in Atlantic Canada.  

 

With financial support provided by the Canada Summer Job program, ViewPoint Gallery plans to hire a Gallery Assistant for 35 hours per week for 8 weeks, beginning Monday, July 3, 2023 and ending Friday, August 25, 2023. The salary is $14.50 per hour (Nova Scotia minimum wage).  This is an exciting opportunity that will provide hands-on experience in an art gallery.

 

The usual work-week will be from Monday to Friday, 11-6 pm. The Gallery Assistant will be responsible for leading a one-week photography camp for youth and teenagers.  During the summer camp, the Gallery Assistant’s hours will be from 9 am to 4 pm.  

 

Eligible applicants:

  • must be between 15 and 30 years of age;

  • must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and

  • must be legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant Nova Scotia legislation and regulations.

 

The Role of the Gallery Assistant

Working under the direction of the Board of Directors and ViewPoint members, the Gallery Assistant will be responsible for a wide range of administrative duties in the Gallery.  The Gallery Assistant will:

  • staff the Gallery during its hours of operation, greet visitors, answer questions, and handle sales;

  • develop and lead a one-week summer camp aimed at youth aged 12-15;

  • prepare selected images for exhibit by printing and framing;

  • assist with new exhibits and openings; 

  • attend monthly Board meetings;

  • promote the Gallery through social media and communication methods;

  • update Gallery records and artists’ informational materials, as needed;

  • provide information to the media and Gallery stakeholders, as needed;

  • maintain Gallery and office supplies;

  • undertake other tasks, as assigned.  

 

Requirements:  The successful candidate must have expertise in the following areas:

  • Knowledge and practical skills of photography as an art form;

  • Capacity to develop and deliver a summer camp for youth and teenagers;

  • Experience working with adolescents; 

  • A positive and enthusiastic attitude;

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team; 

  • Capacity to ask questions and seek guidance when necessary;

  • Ability to multi-task, problem-solve, meet deadlines, and accomplish tasks without close supervision;

  • Familiarity with computer technology, social media applications (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram), and word processing, email, and spreadsheet programs;

  • Excellent communication skills for speaking, listening, and writing.

 

Additional Skills:  The ideal candidate has additional skills:

  • Good decision-making skills;

  • Strong teamwork skills;

  • Flexibility to work with diverse people;

  • A professional attitude and demeanour;

  • Marketing experience is an asset.

 

Field of interest: The successful candidate will be interested in Photography, Fine Arts, Applied Arts, Public Relations, Education, Communications, Graphic Design, or Public Administration. This position will provide valuable work experience for candidates who are interested in working in the cultural and non-profit sectors.

 

Employment dates and hours:        

Dates: The Gallery Assistant will be employed for 8 weeks beginning Monday, July 3, 2023 and ending Friday, August 25, 2023.  

Hours: The work-hours will consist of a total of 280 hours spread out over 8 weeks, approximately 35 hours/week for 8 weeks.  The usual work-week will be Monday to Friday, 11-6 pm.  During the summer camp, the Gallery Assistant’s hours will be from 9 am to 4 pm.  

 

Salary: $14.50 per hour (Nova Scotia minimum wage)
