For October 2024, we are featuring a photograph by David Kempton.
Artist Statement:
Both of my parents were from Hamilton, so visits back were an occasional thing as my father was transferred here and there by the Navy, and later when we lived nearer after he retired his commission. My partner and I visited Hamilton this Spring (2024) to deliver to a vintage clothing store some vintage clothing that came to her through her family. It turns out there are a number of vintage stores in the downtown, with some fine opportunities for a photographer who likes the urban vibe. This is, I hope, the start of a series that will start with vintage shops and include old buildings and factories.
Biography
A photographer in continuous evolution since the early 1970s, Mr. Kempton has had a lifelong love of landscape and urban photography, but has never wanted to settle into a style or subject matter.
As a photographer, he sees challenge in taking what is in front of him and presenting it in a form that lets viewers take meaning from it. He generally uses only techniques available before the digital era: the camera controls, plus the digital equivalents of contrast, brightness, grain, paper choice etc. Of course, he finds that digital photography opens up techniques that were very difficult in the wet darkroom, such as colour and multiple exposure. He occasionally invents new techniques, including imaging using a flatbed scanner.
He has often explored the urban, built environment, and visually commented on loneliness, loss, social issues.
