AUGUST 2024 FRESH EYES GUEST ARTIST
Vanessa Levesque

Vanessa draws on her background as an educator in her photographic career. Always having an eye for detail, her ability to keenly observe things honed over years in the classroom has shaped her photography.

Vanessa completed her Bachelor of Education at the University of New Brunswick. After years of teaching in public schools, she went back into the classroom and studied photography at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.

Vanessa’s interest in photography quickly transformed into a passion exploring many photographic genres. She continues to educate herself by attending workshops and lectures, including workshops with noted photographer Freeman Patterson, Stephanie Johnson and Bill Ward to name a few.

In 2019 Vanessa held her first gallery exhibit, “The Other Side of Fredericton” followed by a second exhibit in 2022. She earned the prestigious title of Photographer of the Year 2023 from her photo club and has been published in the online gallery catalog of The Photo Gallery in Vermont.

Autumn’s Veil

October 2023, Fredericton, NB

In this image, the fall foliage takes center stage. The foreground leaves are sharply defined. Meanwhile the background dances with streaks of white and pale colors, as if the woods themselves are in motion.

Artist Statement:

My journey with Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) began during a class trip to a local junkyard. Our instructor gave us full access to the facility and introduced us to the technique, encouraging us to explore and experiment. Initially, I was unsure of how to set my camera or what to expect, but as I started to understand the process, I became captivated by the unique images my camera was producing. I fell in love with ICM because it defies traditional photographic rules, allowing for free movement of the camera and resulting in painterly, one-of-a-kind images.

Over the past few years, I have committed myself to refining my ICM skills. Recently, I have pushed my creativity further by incorporating multiple exposures (ME) into my landscapes. This combination has taken my work to new heights, blending the fluidity of ICM with the complexity of ME to create truly distinctive pieces.
