Louise Trotter
I'm a photographer and travel writer based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. With a background in science, I’m drawn to the intersection of analytical thinking and creative expression. My career in occupational health and safety taught me to observe and document carefully—skills that carry naturally into photography.
Right now, I’m retracing the 1899 bicycle journey of fellow Nova Scotian Karl Creelman, photographing the exact locations he visited 125 years ago. These images spark conversations between past and present, exploring how places evolve—or stay remarkably the same. I’m documenting the journey in The Karl Chronicles—a project registered with the Royal Geographical Society.
As I shift toward more creative work, photography has become my way of exploring the world with both scientific curiosity and artistic vision.
Philosophy
The camera lets me see differently—lean in, slow down, and connect with what's in front of me. Photography is how I explore the unfamiliar, driven by a deep curiosity about people, places, and the stories they hold.
Each journey—whether to a bustling city or a quiet village—fuels my creativity and shifts my perspective. I’m drawn to colour—high-contrast, vibrant images that capture moments from my travels. From street scenes to landscapes, I look for that intersection between what I see and feel.
I try to photograph responsibly, especially when capturing people and cultures. Even with digital gear, I approach each shot as deliberately as if I were using film—except, perhaps, when it comes to sheep. There’s just something about them.
Technique
I shoot with a Canon mirrorless, mostly handheld—travel keeps my gear light. I love printing my work and experimenting with different papers (especially cotton), formats, and techniques. There’s something special about watching an image come to life on paper, and my photographs really suit the texture and ink absorption of fine art prints. Lately, I’ve started exploring aerial photography too—though my drone piloting skills are still a work in progress.
