Philosophy: Photographs should be printed and displayed, lived with, like any art. I make fine prints, ready to frame and hang, that will retain their value. I also prefer smaller sizes, which I consider more traditional, but which also better suit modern living spaces.
Technique: Shooting RAW, with Canon and Fujifilm cameras, as well as smartphones. Preference for wide angle (think 28mm). Canon Digital Professional Pro and Silkypix Pro software, with some Corel Paintshop Pro
Style: I’ve never been too concerned with having a visual style, but for subjects I tend to the minimal, the overlooked and the absurd.
Background: I started serious photography in the early 1970s, when at university studying Physics. Self-taught, mainly through looking at photographs, I became adept in the darkroom. I made the transition to digital photography through a cheap lo-res camera, which opened my eyes to other ways of seeing. With better cameras, I became able to do things with a digital image that I was not able (or not patient enough) to do in the darkroom, such as colour and pixel-level manipulations.
For the most part, though, I have largely gone back to my roots, straight full-frame photography, presenting everyday, often mundane things that others might overlook. I am inviting the viewer to pay attention, to embrace some ambiguity, to find meaning. You weren’t there at the time, but now that you have seen this image, you partly were.
