MARY KYD

Philosophy
Expand and be receptive to new ideas, but always acknowledge the past. Experiment with ways of using photography to harness its power for visual communication. Engage with your surroundings: the serious, surreal, and sublime. Look for the understory.
Technique
My photographic practice involves a range of techniques, including digital photography,
cameraless techniques, photomontage, mixed media, and stop motion. Essentially,
whatever it takes to realize my vision for the work.
Style
As an emerging photographer, I explore many photographic genres; however, landscapes, urban scenes, and still life are increasingly important in my practice.
Background
I am Canadian/British and have lived in Canada, England and Scotland. It has been a winding journey that, thankfully, has led me to photography. Graduating with a BA (Hons) in History, becoming a chartered accountant, then a lighting designer, and now a photographer. Art has been a current running through my life, especially drawing; however, it wasn’t until 2019 that I began to photograph in earnest. I hold a Diploma in Photography from The Photography Institute and am currently enrolled in the online BA (Hons) Photography at the Open College of the Arts (UK). Additionally, I have completed several practical courses through the Royal Photographic Society, of which I am a member. For me, taking classes is enjoyable not only for the learning but also as a fantastic way to connect with photographers worldwide.
