KAS STONE

Technique

From its origins in traditional landscape photography – “getting it right in camera” – my work has evolved in response to the miraculous tools of the modern digital darkroom. Now, rather than documenting the landscape literally, I prefer to treat it metaphorically, transforming the camera’s raw materials into images that express my shifting personal landscape of thoughts and feelings. I do not hesitate to alter and combine photographs to create a fresh perspective. And I put a ridiculous amount of effort into choosing complementary titles!

Philosophy

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” (John Lennon, 1980). As an inveterate planner, it’s taken me decades to accept the truth of these words and to embrace life’s unexpected happenings rather than rail against them. This insight also applies to my photography. When I take my camera out with open eyes and no expectations, I am rewarded with fresh vision and often amazed by what unfolds: artful images inspired by wild landscapes, both outer and inner.

Style

Solitude, silence and space are essential to my life – as is a sense of humour. My images mirror these qualities in their use of negative space, simplicity, careful structure and cheerful rule-breaking. Viewers often mistake them for paintings, which always delights me.

Background

My career as a photographic artist began, not with a camera, but with a pen. At the time (the late 1990s) I was stranded in Toronto, far away from the wild coastal scenery of Atlantic Canada where I had spent my formative years. Escaping the city at every opportunity to hike, paddle and camp, I started writing about my wilderness adventures. My writings needed illustrations, and that’s when I picked up a camera.

Now, twenty-five years later, I make my home again near the sea in Nova Scotia and my full-time living from photography. My portfolio includes an extensive list of exhibitions and retail shows, presentations to photography groups across North America and Great Britain, and several books and many feature articles and images published in Canadian and U.K. magazines.
