ViewPoint Gallery International Photography Competition July 2025 winner

“Uwe Reading"

Monique Campbell
(Canada)

The ViewPoint Gallery holds an annual jury-reviewed photography competition with one winning print displayed in our gallery each month.

For June 2025, we are featuring a photograph by Monique Campbell.

Artist Statement:

The image of Uwe Reading is an example of my humanist street portraiture. I captured my friend Uwe Harders reading one morning while visiting him. The back-light from the window behind him accentuated his hands as he read his braille book. My approach is to make photographs of ordinary moments that most people pass by without a second glance. I hope when viewers see my work, they pause to linger and contemplate while ultimately feeling an emotive connection with the subject.

My mentor, the late Ted Grant, was the granddaddy of Canadian photojournalism, and taught me that “When you photograph people in colour you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls.” I pay tribute to Ted through this soulful portrait of Uwe. Both men have inspired me immensely.

Price: $200 CAD
