GRAEME COXON

Botanicals
I admire the long tradition of botanical illustration from the time before cameras. With my botanical work I hope isolating an object and taking a close look at it – plant, seaweed, insect – can reveal its beauty and complexity in unexpected ways. The three ingredients of form, colour and curiosity all have to be present, I think, to engage a viewer’s interest.
I use a combination of a large flatbed scanner or a lightpad and camera to take the image depending on a subject’s size and translucency.
Landscapes
My recent landscape interest is in the more rugged parts of the Nova Scotia coast, the stormier the conditions the better. I hope to capture the power and drama of a scene (without becoming a washed-up artist). I have also been drawn to photograph scenes of discomforting urban development.
