There’s a small stretch of coastline on the Eastern Shore that I have photographed hundreds, perhaps thousands of times over the last few years. Seascapes. Starscapes. Wildlife photos. Closeups of the creatures found in the tidepools and the plants growing at the tumultuous meeting point of land and sea. There is a sense of finality and lose to these shores. This is where the land ends. Shoreline slips into sea. Rising oceans submerge stone. Yet. if you look closely enough, the lushness and vitality of life can appear almost Edenic. An ever- renewing reminder of the resilience and adaptability of the natural world.
The photos in this exhibition were all taken in Little Liscomb on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia. The Mi’kmaw name for these waters is Me’katewik, which is often translated as “where the big eels are found.” The name speaks to the specificity of the Mi’kmaw relationship to the area and the importance that it has played in Mi’kmaw life.
I take photographs as a way of exploring – and hopefully deepening – my own relationship to the place where I live. In doing so, I want to acknowledge that this is the unceded land of the Mi’kmaw people. I have the opportunity to take these photos because I am a beneficiary of the Treaty relationship and the long history of Mi’kmaw stewardship of these beautiful lands.
