East Meets West
A Nova Scotian artist photographs the Pacific Coast
(Halifax, Nova Scotia) – Roxanne Smith’s new exhibit of Black & White photography PacificScapes will show at ViewPoint Gallery from Thursday March 2nd to Sunday April 2nd, 2006. It features landscapes of the Pacific Coast of North America.
PacificScapes is a journey along the edge of the North American continent. These images take us to the beaches of Oregon, along the cliffs of California and into the rainforests of British Columbia. Smith made these photographs during a six-month journey exploring North America.
“I took the less traveled roads with a desire to really see the landscape, spend time in it, and to meet those who were also exploring,” states Dartmouth-based photographer Roxanne Smith. “The leisurely pace allowed time to visit more places, to spend longer periods at each location, and to become familiar with the area.”
The work is a collection of photos that show the larger landscapes as well as details of the landforms. Smith seeks to discover a new terrain in the details. In her exploration of these landscapes she captures the essence of the place, and her emotional reaction to the landscapes she finds. PacificScapes opens at ViewPoint Gallery (2050 Gottingen Street, Halifax N.S.) on Thursday March 2nd, at 6:00pm. The exhibition continues until Sunday April 2nd. The gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday, 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
The artist will be giving a talk at the gallery about her work on Sunday March 12 at 2:00.
