Philosophy
Roxanne Smith's work shows views of everyday life; people occupying ordinary spaces and landscapes. She also photographs temporary constructions of fragile objects and light. In these works, Smith is exploring concepts and themes that are experienced by all humans: the fragility of life, the certainty of death and a reminder to be aware of each moment.
Style
I work primarily in Black & White.
Technique
Smith works with a digital Pentax camera with 31mm and 43mm lenses. She uses a tripod and the camera's self-timer to include herself in the images.
Background
Smith includes painters, photographers and sculptors as influencers of her work. Some influences are: Joseph Cornell, Gregory Crewdson, Jeff Wall, Carrie Mae Weems, and Andrew Wyeth.
She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mount Allison University. She has held 12 solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions. Her work is collected by the Canada Council Art Bank, the Nova Scotia Art Bank, Mount Saint Vincent University Art Gallery, and privately in Canada and the United States.
She has been a member of ViewPoint Gallery since 2004.
