Philosophy
Photography is a flexible and accessible medium that readily lends itself to a wide range of styles and purposes. Like other art forms, photography is a method for creative expression. And it has the magical ability to stop time.

Style
Kathleen’s photographic style is variable, depending on the content, purpose, and context. Much of her work draws on the documentary tradition and offers social comment. She feels that verisimilitude - the ability to look real - is at the heart of photography’s power.

Technique
Although Kathleen’s early experiences with the medium of photography were with silver-based methods and materials, she has fully embraced the joys of digital photography.

Background

Kathleen has a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Photography from Ryerson University (1981), Master of Education from Dalhousie University (1992), and Doctor of Education from the University of Toronto (1999). Her doctoral dissertation focused on the use of photography as a tool for analysing social change.

Kathleen joined ViewPoint Gallery in 2002. Solo exhibits of her work have taken place at ViewPoint Gallery, Owens Gallery, Craig Gallery, and Saint John Arts Centre.

Kathleen taught photography for over 20 years, including 15 years at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University.  She also taught at the Maritime Photographic Workshops, University of New Brunswick, Mount Allison University, Dalhousie University, and Mount Saint Vincent University.

Since leaving NSCAD’s faculty in 2002, Kathleen has worked as a senior administrator for various organizations such as the Canadian Council on Learning, Centre for Literacy of Québec, Community Sector Council of Nova Scotia, and the NDP Caucus Office. She currently works as a researcher for the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

Kathleen’s photographic work is a visual expression of her commitment to working with others to build a just, equitable, and creative society.
