THE INSCRIPTION WILL INSCRIBE ON YOUR HEART
New photography collection poetic response to carved love letter

(Halifax, Nova Scotia) – Roxanne Smith’s new exhibit, The Inscription, will show at ViewPoint Gallery from April 1st to May 3rd, 2009. The Black & White photographs in the exhibit were inspired by Smith’s discovery of a love letter carved in bedrock on a beach at the mouth of Halifax Harbour, NS.

The Inscription blends the carved words of Tom, the unknown author, with questions posed by the artist. “Why did Tom carve the letter in stone?” “Did Tom’s lost love, Bev, ever see the letter?” “What became of Tom and Bev?” And so on. Smith asks these and other rhetorical questions by superimposing text, on her photographs. These questions are woven together with Tom’s original letter.

“The words of the letter opened more questions than it answered; I found myself becoming more and more drawn to the location and began this body of work”, says Smith. “I wanted to create an art piece that did honour to this very moving document.”

The exhibit includes photographs of the inscription itself and the surrounding landscape, as well as other landscapes from Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Maine, and Oregon. “The exhibition is a poetic response to what I found on the beach”, says Smith. The Inscription opens at ViewPoint Gallery (1272 Barrington Street) on Thursday April 2nd, at 6:00. There will be an artist’s talk on Sunday April 5th at 2:00. The show continues to May 3rd. The Gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday, 12pm to 5pm.
